   [8] Chang’s only Wimbledon quarterfinal in his 14 appearances (had defeated two clay-courters en route to the quarterfinal: Albert Costa & Bruguera). Sampras [1] was playing his best tennis of 1994, and it was reflected in that encounter when he decreased the speed of the first serve in order to keep higher percentage – he delivered an excellent serve-and-volley performance instead of his usual service bombarding on grass. In the first two sets Chang had absolutely no chance. In the 3rd set he modified his tactics, attacking the net behind the first serve, and it changed the complexion of the match – Sampras needed 4 deuces to break for a 3:1 lead, and five deuces in two of his last three service games.
