Despite their two previous encounters when Courier beat Edberg in relatively easy four-setters, the Swede was a favorite before the Wimbledon ’93 semifinal as a player amazingly experienced on Centre Court at the All-England Club. And the initial phase of the match confirmed it – he led 6-4, 2:0* (30/15) when Courier made an overhead and took the momentum. It’s remarkable that the American broke the Swede in every game as he had a break point, producing a return/passing-shot winner each time. The American became the youngest player (22.10 y.o.) to reach all four Grand Slam finals.
