  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 28-32, 42-43, 25-9, 40-40 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    38 % Becker – 50 of 131
    40 % Ivanisevic – 52 of 128

There was a common feeling that the 3-time Wimbledon champion escaped from loss with huge amount of luck, and the 18-year-old Yugoslavian would become a new champion soon. However, no-one expected then, how tremendously would develop Sampras’ talent (the American lost at Wimbledon in the first rounds of years 1989-90)… Ivanisevic was serving at 6:5 (30-all) in the 2nd set when he slipped and fell on grass after very good first serve which Becker barely returned. The youngster also led 3:0* in the tie-break which he lost 4/7. In the 4th set he was two points away again as leading 5:4* in the second tie-break – Becker obtained two points thanks to service winners then, and on his first match point he was awarded victory as Ivanisevic netted a relatively easy BH volley. The match lasted 2 hours 30 minutes.
