Points won by each set: | 38-35, 23-29, 33-23, 30-20 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
44 % Becker – 51 of 114
30 % Leconte – 36 of 117
West German sensation, 17-year-old Becker [20] advanced to his first major quarterfinal after two dramatic five-setters, thus many spectators could expect the quarterfinal would be his end-station because should have been tired, and he faced four years older player, who had already played French Open quarterfinal a month before. Bigger experience and quick hand (very helpful on grass) didn’t help the Frenchman though. The opening set was crucial; Leconte [26] came back in the tie-break from 1:5 to lead 6:5, but he missed his backhand return off Becker’s 2nd serve. The teenager took the breaker 9/7 and was serving superbly in sets 3 and 4 (in this set Leconte helped a lot playing terrible game at 3-all) finishing the contest with two consecutive aces. # It was the first meeting between these two players, the following year they would face each other on the same court in the semifinal as well as in 1993 (fourth round) with Becker always leaving the court as a 4-set winner.
