A Grand Slam final of the 20th century given the Open Era, it lasted 3 hours 53 minutes… The most wasted set points in a set in Grand Slam finals… in fact they were match points (seven): [1] Borg led *5:4 (40/15) in the 4th set, another five match points he had in the tie-break (6:5, *7:6, 10:9, *11:10 & 12:11), which he ultimately lost 16/18 after 22 minutes. The Swede was close to find himself 0-2 in sets: after an abysmal opener, he survived two tough games at 2-all (4 deuces) & 4-all (4 deuces again), saving four break points in total. In the final set, McEnroe [2] saved seven break points before collapsing on eight match point. Borg celebrated that victory showing so many emotions like never before or after. ”For sure, it is the best match I have ever played at Wimbledon,” said the 24-year-old Borg. # It’s still the longest tie-break played in main-level finals; at the time, after ten years with tie-breaks, it was the second longest tie-break in history (the record 20/18 had been established by Borg in 1973, it was unbeaten for almost 50 years)!

Borg’s route to his 59th title:
    1 Ismail el Shafei 6-3, 6-4, 6-4
    2 Shlomo Glickstein 6-3, 6-1, 7-5
    3 Rod Frawley 6-4, 6-7(8), 6-1, 7-5
    4 Balazs Taroczy 6-1, 7-5, 6-2
    Q Gene Mayer 7-5, 6-3, 7-5
    S Brian Gottfried 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0
    W John McEnroe 1-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-7(16), 8-6
