The stats of that 3-hour 33-minute match without 8 games of the 3rd set, so 45 of 53 games included (84%). Number of aces, double faults & break points valid for the entire encounter. The 17-year-old Becker saved a mini-match point at 5-all in the 4th set with a backhand volley. In the tie-break he was 3 points away from being eliminated as Mayotte (No. 16) improved from 2:6 to *5:6. Becker went to win the championship to become the youngest champion in the tournament history.

This match was also remarkable for another reason: in the 4th set Becker hurt himself and wanted to retire! He looked to his coach Günther Bosch and his manager Ion Tiriac who quickly convinced him to continue playing! Boris once said in an interview that if Mayotte had not turned his back to him in that situation, the match most probably would have been over… Well, maybe Boris also exaggerates and dramatizes a bit. He tends to do that every now and then.

Yeah, I watched that match two years ago but didn’t notice physical struggle worth retirement :) He was young-inexperienced & maybe he thought something like “if I’m not retiring now, I’ll be forced to do this as I did against Scanlon a year before” 😉
