Exciting match on Centre Court between 20-year-old players of contrasting game-styles. Hewitt [5] was a serious favorite to win a major for the first time in his career after the title defense at Queens Club, defeating Sampras second year running. Therefore it was a total shocker that against the qualifier ranked 143, he was trailing *0:5 (15/40). Dent was constantly attacking the net, but Hewitt has already established himself as a specialist against serve-and-volley players. The rain at 1-all in the 2nd set changed the texture of the encounter, nevertheless Hewitt was forced to save a mini-set point at 5-all. Since that moment he was controlling the match, but leading *6:5 (40/15) in the 4th set, he squandered the double match point quickly with Dent’s attacks. Then, at deuce, he committed two double faults, and the crowd significantly helped Dent to win the breaker 7/2. The American was on fire, but he overcooked and in the first three games of the decider he just won 2 points losing 12. Hewitt was close to get the second break in that set at 4:1 and 5:2.
