   Points won directly on serve:
   33 % Rafter – 30 of 89
   23 % Bjorkman – 23 of 96

   Unexpectedly easy win for Rafter [3] – even though he was a defending champion – because Bjorkman [12] led 4:2 in their H2H at the time. Rafter almost notched a perfect match, he led *4:3 (40/30) in the 3rd set when the Swede – who was trying everything – finally broke and put himself a couple of times within two points from the 4th set at 5:4… Bjorkman was the first of three Swedes who lost in the US Open ’98 quarter-finals, three of them at this stage of a major appeared for the first time since the Australian Open ’90.
