   The 225th (178-47 record) & last Grand Slam match in Edberg’s career. The 30-year-old Swede [28] playing his farewell major, faced a five years younger opponent [6], who enjoyed the form of his life in 1996, especially as far as the serve is concerned. The crowd gathered on Centre Court during the night session, behaved quite calmly almost throughout the contest because the advantage of the Croat had been overwhelming – he already had set points on serve at 5:1 in the opening set, had one set point at 5:3* in the 2nd set, and led 4:2* (40/30) in the 3rd set when lost a point which should have won to finish it in quick straight sets. Edberg somehow managed to come back saving a match point at *3:5 & even had a set point in the tie-break at 7:6 (Goran’s service winner) but lost 9/11 on fifth match point. It was only their third Grand Slam meeting; the previous one (four years earlier) Ivanisevic won in the quarterfinal as well.

   Also quite interesting: this match took place the same evening as the famous Sampras-Corretja-match, with Sampras vomitting in the tie-break of the 5th set. Maybe you could do a “picture” of that match, too? When the match was over, Ivanisevic celebrated very vocally in the direction of his entourage. People in the stands were booing, because it seemed inappropriate with Edberg ending his career, etc. John McEnroe in the commentary box said that Goran had every right to celebrate like that after such a great success for him and I tended to agree. Somebody who speaks Croatian though told me that Goran was swearing and not just celebrating…Well, Goran Ivanisevic was an interesting character nonetheless in my view!
