Points won by each set: [ 28-23, 15-27, 21-30, 45-40, 30-16 ]
Points won directly behind the serve:
29 % Sampras – 40 of 135
25 % Forget – 36 of 140
Before Sampras [3] became the best player in the world for many years, six years older Forget [13] had been his toughest opponent. In the years 1991-92 they faced each other five times, and Sampras lost four matches… even though he’s one of the best tie-break specialists in history, he lost to Forget all five tie-breaks in those matches! The US Open 4th round was unusual; they belonged to the best five servers in the world at the time (along with Ivanisevic, Krajicek & Stich), yet the scoreline was lopsided, even the tightest ‘6-4’ set was pretty one-sided because Sampras already had a game point to lead 4:0, and he won his last two service games at ‘love’ (four consecutive in total, counting the decider). In the 5th set the American obtained the crucial break in the 1st game, and after four easy holds, he broke again at 5:3 as Forget couldn’t get a point on his serve the only time in the entire contest.
