Points won by each set: | 34-24, 35-25, 26-9 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
28 % Edberg – 19 of 66
12 % Courier – 11 of 87
The match lasted 2 hours 4 minutes, almost an hour longer than the French Open ’70 final in which the scoreline was the same… Edberg [2] notched all overhead winners in the 2nd set, he won a game for a 5:3 lead with three overheads & a service winner. It was shocking that Edberg won that final so easily, it’s even more staggering in retrospect given their H2H record (Courier 6-4). It was simply one of those days when everything works for one player, and the other one loses too fast to implement some game-style modifications (Courier didn’t do anything more than lobbing in the 2nd set). In the 2nd set Edberg broke already at 1-all. “I’ve been pummeled before,” said Courier [5], “but this is the worst beating I’ve taken this year. He was making my shots look like I don’t know what.”
Edberg’s route to his 31st title:
1 Brian Shelton 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-1
2 Jeff Tarango 6-3, 7-5, 6-0
3 Jim Grabb 7-6(8), 4-6, 6-3, 6-4
4 Michael Chang 7-6(2), 7-5, 6-3
Q Javier Sanchez 6-3, 6-2, 6-3
S Ivan Lendl 6-3, 6-3, 6-4
W Jim Courier 6-2, 6-4, 6-0
