Cherkasov [50] sank into oblivion being young, but he’d been a prominent junior (finalist at US Open & Orange Bowl of 1987) and among the best upcoming players in the early 90s. The Soviet Union representative, with the help of forehand topspins & great footwork, advanced to quarterfinals of two majors in 1990 (Australian & US Opens) – both times he lost after almost identical scorelines: 3-6, 2-6, 3-6 to Lendl and 2-6, 2-6, 3-6 to Agassi [4] during a night session “cat & mouse” meeting. At Roland Garros ’92 he reached his third and last major quarterfinal, losing in four sets to Korda.
