Arguably the most exciting semifinal day in the Open era. There were two dramatic high-level matches on Super-Saturday (September 8, 1984), between players of contrast styles: first serve-and-volleyer (Cash) lost to Lendl despite holding a match point on serve, then serve-and-volleyer (McEnroe) survived in five before midnight against a double defending champion Connors… These four guys composed also semifinal pairs at Wimbledon ’84, but in different configurations (McEnroe d. Cash, Connors d. Lendl)
Cash saved a match point at *4:5 in the 5th set and wasted on his own serve at 6:5 – Lendl (on the run) lobbed him using forehand to force an error! Cash earlier led 30/0 in that game.
