  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: [ 32-21, 28-13, 34-23 ]
Points won directly behind the serve:
    37 % Sampras – 27 of 72
    20 % Gilbert – 16 of 79

Clinical 94-minute performance from the 22-year-old Sampras [2], who rather unexpectedly became the best player in the world two days earlier – it happened because Courier [1] suffered a shocking defeat to Jonathan Stark 4-6 2-6 in the third round, and he lost many points as a defending champion. “I think it’s a great achievement. I’m very happy. But, I just try to win as many Grand Slam titles as I can. To win the U.S. Open and Wimbledon as No. 2 is more important,” Sampras said after beating Wheaton, and in the next two matches as a fresh No. 1 in the world, he displayed perfect tennis defeating two “old school” veterans – Masur [23] & Gilbert [32]. It was Sampras’ second 3-0 win over Gilbert in a final (the previous occurred in Munich 2.5 years before).

Sampras’ route to his 16th title:
    2 Jamie Morgan 7-5, 6-3
    3 Guillaume Raoux 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-3
    Q David Wheaton 6-3, 3-6, 6-4
    S Wally Masur 6-4, 6-2
    W Brad Gilbert 6-2, 6-2, 6-2
