The Australian Indoor Championships ’93 it’s the biggest title in career of Jaime Yzaga , who was 26 at the time. The event had very strong field that year with all seeded players of the Top 20 – 3 of them already lost in the opening round, Ivan Lendl & Boris Becker squandering match points.
Korda prior to the final had won all four meetings against the Peruvian – the best player among the shortest at his times on the tour (170 cm, 5’7″).
In the mid-2nd set Korda twisted his ankle a bit, needed a 3-minute treatment & trailed *2:4. Yzaga perhaps too early saw himself as a titlist and his forehand deserted him for twenty minutes – Korda won six straight games. The Czech led 5:4* & 6:5 in the 3rd set, but Yzaga held comfortably twice. In the 4th set Yzaga had two match points leading 6:5*, on second occasion he even thought he won the match. In the ensuing tie-break he ultimately converted his fifth match point with a backhand down the line winner.
Yzaga’s route to his 8th and last title:
1 Brad Gilbert 6-2, 6-2
2 Wally Masur 6-1, 6-4
Q Jim Courier 6-4, 2-6, 6-4
S Goran Ivanisevic 6-3, 6-4
W Petr Korda 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(7)
