Just one week after their meeting in the Hamburg semifinal, they played another semifinal of a big event. The Croat began the Roman encounter in similar fashion, breaking Bruguera early in the opener. He led 3:1* but the Spaniard broke back and got the decisive breaks leading 5:4 in both sets. Ivanisevic “saved” the first match point with a powerful service winner, but a linesman called his first “foot fault”, and after the second conservative serve, the Croat lost a baseline rally.
