Very short & lopsided five-setter, it lasted just 2 hours 32 minutes. Kafelnikov [3] already led 5:2* in the 2nd set (then saved a double break point at 5-all) while Kuerten established a 2:0* (40/15) lead in the decider (so he was on an 8-game winning streak; the Russian didn’t bother for three games once he was 0:3* in the 4th set) and held his serve to the end quite comfortably. In the last game the defending champion had a break point, but Kuerten fired three service winners in a row. For the 20-year-old Brazilian [66], it was his third straight five-set win, all those matches against an excellent opposition (Muster & Medvedev before Kafelnikov).
