Points won by each set: [ 30-21, 29-15, 29-24 ]
Points won directly on serve:
20 % Muster – 15 of 74
22 % Kafelnikov – 17 of 74
Express match. Kafelnikov , the usually solid baseliner, couldn’t deal with Muster’s regularity from the back of the court. The Russian was completely outplayed in two sets, thus he changed his game-style from the beginning of the 3rd set – began applying serve-and-volley behind each serve, also attacking the net more in Muster’s service games. This tactics was almost successful as he led 4:3* (40/30) – then Muster won the longest rally (21 strokes) of the semifinal, finishing it with a forehand winner. In the following game the Russian led 30/0 – at that moment he had won 18 out of 22 points on serve with offensive attitude, but Muster managed to get four straight points and easily served the match out. Kafelnikov will be similarly destroyed in a Grand Slam semifinal six years later at the US Open losing 1 minute shorter encounter to Hewitt.
