In the 3-hour 19-minute duel, a slight underdog Courier [9] saved two break points trailing 1:3 in the 2nd set which turned to be crucial in the end – the first one with his maiden overhead that day – then the rain fell. After the delay, the wind was very strong, and Agassi [4] couldn’t find his groove off the forehand side; at 3-all (3rd ‘deuce’) in that set – another rain-break. After the comeback Courier changed his tactics operating closer tho the baseline – it helped him to take the 2nd set (he saved another two break points at 3-all), and proved to be successful in the last two sets. There were three consecutive breaks of serve at the end of the decider, at 4-all (15-all) Agassi was seven points from the title – yet Courier won 7 out of the last 8 points finishing the contest with a powerful ace down the T. Much more impressive title for the 21-year-old man from Florida in retrospect because very good players like Ferreira, Larsson & Martin hadn’t won anything big then.
