Lendl defended his ’86 title. Their fourth and last meeting in Paris (within six years). An 83-stroke rally at 3-all (15-all) in the 1st set: Wilander finished it with a winner, Lendl served at 4:5. There was a rain-delay – which lasted 35 minutes – at 3:2* for Lendl in the 4th set. The entire tie-break played in the rain, the Swede won a rally for 2:4 after 46 strokes, but it didn’t turn the tables. The time duration: 4 hours 17 minutes – the first out of three Grand Slam finals between Wilander & Lendl that lasted more than 4 hours! Wilander’s first defeat after 17 victories in a row (he had won two big titles on clay prior to Paris).

In the 4th round Lendl played the longest game in the Grand Slam history: serving at 5:3 vs Nystrom in the 3rd set, he blew 9 set points and lost the game after 15 deuces (!) – it lasted 28 minutes, he also had 2 set points in the following game… the two-day match lasted 4 hours 5 minutes (3 hours the first three sets)
