Points won by each set: | 22-28, 16-28, 36-32, 41-34, 42-31 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
18 % Lendl – 29 of 155
23 % McEnroe – 37 of 157
The final lasted 4 hours 8 minutes. [1] McEnroe’s outburst (which cost him loss of concentration) occurred when he led 30/15 on Lendl’s serve at 1-all in the 3rd set. Prior to the final Lendl [2] had lost six matches in a row to McEnroe; counting that French Open final, the Czechoslovak couldn’t even win five games in a set as far as eight consecutive sets are concerned! ‘Big Mac’ was:
– 6 points away from triumph in the 3rd set
– 5 points away in the 4th set (earlier led 4:2)
– 8 points away in the 5th set
Lendl commented: “I saw a glimmer of hope as soon as I broke his service for the first time in the match in the middle of the third set. He broke me back, but I felt that once I had broken him once, I could do it again. I just had to hang on in there.” Prior to that final, McEnroe had won 42 successive matches (all in 1984).
Lendl’s route to his 41st title (first major):
1 Matt Mitchell 6-3, 6-2, 6-0
2 Mario Martinez 6-1, 6-0, 6-1
3 Paul McNamee 6-1, 7-5, 6-4
4 Anders Jarryd 6-4, 6-0, 6-4
Q Andres Gomez 6-3, 6-7(8), 6-4, 6-3
S Mats Wilander 6-3, 6-3, 7-5
W John McEnroe 3-6, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5, 7-5
