  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 30-23, 37-36, 46-45 |
    Points won directly on serve:
    14 % Noah – 15 of 103
    9 % Wilander – 11 of 114

Noah [9] in the best period of his tennis life at the age of 23, as he won his third consecutive singles tournament (following Madrid and Hamburg, both on clay… in the meantime he played in the World Team Cup where lost two matches), defeating Wilander [7] for the second time in that period (6-4, 6-4 in the Hamburg quarterfinal). The French Open final lasted 2 hours 24 minutes. Noah, playing without a clear pattern of attacking the net, already led 5:3* in the 2nd set when the match became very competitive. In the 3rd set the Frenchman served to stay in it at 4:5, then he served for the championship at 6:5 – Wilander opened the game passing Noah thrice in a row with his forehand (two return winners). In the 10-point tie-break, Noah made eight trips to the net, six were successful, including the match point when Wilander’s return flew too long. The following year they met on the same court, but in the quarterfinal, and Wilander took his revenge.
“Who is this guy and what is happening?‘” Noah said about his celebration when he crossed the net just after the shake-hand and sunk into his father’s arms. “Then I realized it was my dad. For him, it is very hard. Every time he returns to Cameroon after being here he has more white hair – this time maybe he won’t get so many, as I won. My family has helped me a lot, especially when I left them when I was very young. It was hard for me to leave them and they helped me a lot.” Noah spent his childhood in Cameroon, and left it for France at the age of 11 when – as a great talent – he was discovered by Arthur Ashe. To commemorate his roots in the first half of the 80s, Noah was wearing a wristband in colours of the Cameroonian flag.

Noah’s route to his 14th title:
    1 Anders Jarryd 6-1, 6-0, 6-2
    2 Victor Pecci 6-4, 6-3, 6-3
    3 Pat Dupre 7-5, 7-6, 6-2
    4 John Alexander 6-2, 7-6, 6-1
    Q Ivan Lendl 7-6(5), 6-2, 5-7, 6-0
    S Christoph Roger-Vasselin 6-3, 6-0, 6-0
    W Mats Wilander 6-2, 7-5, 7-6(3)

    Serve & volley: Noah 12/19, Wilander 0
