Points won by each set: | 42-37, 21-30, 29-22, 37-34 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
16 % Rune – 22 of 130
20 % Tsitsipas – 25 of 122
The 3-hour upset on Philippe Chatrier Court. Rune [40] rose to the occasion, I had only seen his two full matches before, including a meeting with Gaston on the same court two days before. I knew the 19-year-old Dane would be troublesome for Tsitsipas [4] with his fast & flat ground-stokes, but he surprised me with accurate dropshots, especially off the backhand side. He trailed 1:3* and withstood a double break point at 3:4 in the 1st set; he took the 3rd set when both players were delivering rather poor shots. Rune raced to a *5:2 lead in the 4th set, then the favorite won nine straight points. The last game was tense, Tsitsipas had three break points, but Rune held his nerves and finished the match on his first match point when Tsitsipas hardly missed his forehand (did he really miss?).
