Points won by each set: | 37-30, 34-26, 19-31, 35-29 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
18 % Nadal – 22 of 118
12 % Djokovic – 15 of 123
For the first time in the Open Era, two players faced each other in four consecutive majors, and it occurred in four straight finals! Djokovic had defeated Nadal in London & New York (2011) as well as in an epic Melbourne encounter (2012), but Nadal confirmed his reign in Paris claiming his seventh, record-breaking title there. The Spaniard won in straight sets their two previous clay-court meetings that year (Monte Carlo and Rome), and he actually repeated it in the first two sets. In the 3rd set the weather worsened and Djokovic began to play his best tennis on a slower court trailing 0:2. He won eight straight games, but the final was suspended due to bad weather at *2:1 for the Serb in the 4th set. On sunnier Monday, Nadal broke back immediately after the resumption, and converted his first match point at 6:5 thanks to Djokovic’s double fault. The longest rally (45 strokes) occurred at 15-all in the opening game of the 4th set… Two years later Nadal would defeat Djokovic in the Parisian final again, after a similar encounter.
Nadal’s route to his 50th title:
1 Simone Bolelli 6-2, 6-2, 6-1
2 Denis Istomin 6-2, 6-2, 6-0
3 Eduardo Schwank 6-1, 6-3, 6-4
4 Juan Monaco 6-2, 6-0, 6-0
Q Nicolas Almagro 7-6(4), 6-2, 6-3
S David Ferrer 6-2, 6-2, 6-1
W Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5
