Exceptionally sunny day, faster conditions, and Soderling [7] along with Berdych [17] “turned” the Parisian clay into a hard-court: they didn’t intend to be involved in long, gruelling rallies. They both were focused to obtain as many cheap points as possible with powerful serves and flat groundstrokes. In the end Soderling’s more consistent backhand gave him the edge. The Swede won the last four games and the match in 3 hours 27 minutes advancing to the French Open final second straight year after a 5-set contest (he beat Fernando Gonzalez 6-4 in 5th set a year before).
