   The first of three successive Roland Garros finals between them. Federer won the first five games of the match, a deciding break of the 3rd set occurred at 2-all (in the preceding game Nadal fought off four break points). Federer’s first tie-break lost in Grand Slam finals having won seven in a row. Nadal already led 5:3* (30-all) in the 4th set when Federer played a terrific drive-forehand volley from no-man’s land. In the following game the Spaniard was two points away from victory again, at 5:4 (30/15) when he touched the net chasing the ball which dropped on his side after hitting the net-cord; the next point Federer played in defence in Nadal’s style! “This is a fantastic victory and an incredible moment in my career as a tennis player,” said Nadal. “Federer is the best player in history, no other player has ever had such quality.” # In the third round Nadal established a new record for the longest 4-setter defeating Mathieu after almost 5 hours (the previous record for 19 years belonged to Lendl-Wilander).
