Points won by each set: | 32-29, 22-31, 28-23 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
37 % Sampras – 31 of 82
20 % Courier – 17 of 83
Just eight days after their Essen quarterfinal which [2] Sampras won 6-2, 7-6(6), he ousted Courier again indoors, that time after an intriguing 3-set battle. Already the opening point indicated it’d be a tough match for the best player of the 90s – he won the rally with a backhand volley on the 22nd stroke – he got a point after a similar rally to break Courier [7] leading 4:3 in the decider. I want to mention that Sampras, despite possessing one of the greatest overheads in history, lost the first four points in that match when he played the overheads… Quite untypical that a player who won two games more, lost overall in total points (by a point).
