  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 27-13, 35-41, 31-25 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    31 % Dent – 31 of 84
    12 % Blake – 12 of 88

Almost an all-serve-and-volley duel (Blake [32] was generally playing from the back behind 2nd serves). Great opportunity for both young Americans to get a maiden title. It was their second meeting, and the first two sets almost copied their first encounter in Memphis earlier that year (Blake won 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 coming from a break in the 2nd set). Grass was more natural environment for the 21-year-old Dent [96] who got the decisive break at 1-all in the 3rd set. It’s strange that the fast serving American didn’t need to play even a “5-all” set in Newport. It was a forecast of his entire career: one of the fastest servers but very inconsistent, prone to be broken often, on the other hand he possessed great ground-strokes off both sides (flat & lobs) only if he didn’t need to run before hitting the ball, thus he was able to break his opponents with higher frequency than other players associated with big serves.

Dent’s route to his maiden title (34th main-level event):
    1 Mario Ancic 6-3, 6-4
    2 Jeff Morrison 6-3, 6-4
    Q Alexander Popp 6-3, 6-2
    S Robby Ginepri 3-6, 6-3, 6-1
    W James Blake 6-1, 4-6, 6-4

    # Dent came back from a break down in the 2nd set vs Ginepri
