In 1999, I made a point-by-point stat of the Munich final, without winners. And here it is – breaks of serve underlined…

An unusual event because no seeded player advanced to the quarterfinals. Also the 1st set of the final was untypical – Pavel [77] won his first four service games saving break point in each of them, and he almost copied it trailing 4:5! “It was the best week in my life” said the 23-year-old Argentinian [59]… He claimed three titles in his career, all in Germany on clay; it was the first one (other two: Munich & Stuttgart ’00).

Squillari’s route to his maiden title:
    1 Davide Scala 6-2, 6-2
    2 Tommy Haas 6-2, 6-7(1), 6-1
    Q Michael Kohlmann 6-2, 6-2
    S Mariano Zabaleta 4-6, 6-1, 6-2
    W Andrei Pavel 6-4, 6-3
