  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 33-25, 36-30, 46-38 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    38 % Sampras – 37 of 97
    18 % Chang – 20 of 111

Sampras [5] defeated Chang [15] for the first time in six professional meetings #. It was their first encounter when Sampras was a Grand Slam champion, and the first one on carpet, so the one year older American was more confident & he could have obtained more cheap points with his powerful serve while as a receiver he could have penetrated the court more with his ground-strokes, especially with the forehand. In the 3rd set Chang’s comeback seemed plausible; at 1-all there were two longest games of the match (five deuces on Chang’s serve, then six deuces on Sampras’ serve) – they both held, but it cost Sampras physically more, and he decided not to run to the net directly behind the serve in the consequence of them. After exchange of breaks there was 4-all, but the more tired Sampras managed to win two games in a row with the help of his lethal forehand.

    # Sampras defeated Chang 7-6, 6-3 in the second round of junior US Open ’87 when Chang was 15 y.o.
