It was an amazing event for Janowicz [44], who trailed 2-6 *3:5 (15/40) in his opening match against Dustin Brown! He won the 2nd set having saved four match points in total, and fought off another two match points at *4:5 in the 3rd set. In the second round he was a break down in the 3rd set against Benoit Paire; in the quarterfinals and semifinals the Pole saved two set points (one at *4:5 vs Gilles Simon & another one at *7:8 in the tie-break facing Joao Sousa). In the final he retired due to illness after only 8 minutes of play having lost all 14 points that were contested. It’s the second time an ATP final is finished at 3:0 in the 1st set: previously it happened at Key Biscayne ’96 when Goran Ivanisevic retired after 10 minutes of his match against Andre Agassi, due to stiff neck: more points were played back then (Agassi 17-5).

Points won directly behind the serve:
    32 % Janowicz – 21 of 64
    21 % Simon – 11 of 52
    ———————
    31 % Janowicz – 29 of 91
    29 % Sousa – 26 of 88

    Janowicz’s route to the third-time runner-up:
    1 Dustin Brown 2-6 7-6(1) 7-5 – 6 m.p.
    2 Benoit Paire 6-2 3-6 6-3
    Q Gilles Simon 6-2 7-5
    S Joao Sousa 7-6(9) 3-6 6-1
    F Richard Gasquet 0-3 ret.

Gasquet’s route to his 11th title:
    2 Lucas Pouille 6-3, 7-6(6)
    Q Denis Istomin 6-3, 6-4
    S Gael Monfils 6-4, 6-3
    W Jerzy Janowicz 3-0 ret.
