The 22-year-old Volkov [61] of Soviet Union, unexpectedly reached his first Grand Prix final after dramatic win over Eric Jelen. Volkov needed six match points in three different games to beat the West German 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(7). In the final the Kalingrad native had a break point at 1-all against Jelen’s team-mate, since then it was a one way traffic, despite Becker’s [4] moderate service performance – he was delivering 1st serve below 40%.
