Next Generation ATP Finals – after 30 years comeback to a special “Masters” event for the youngsters (the event for under-21 players was held in years 1984-87, Boris Becker won it thrice). The rules of the new tournament differed from those in the regular ATP season:
– Best of five sets in every match – First to four games in each set – Tie break at 3-all – No-Ad scoring (server’s choice) – No lets – Start match 5 minutes from entry of second player onto court – Shot clock to ensure 25 second rule – Maximum of one medical timeout per player per match – Limits on when coaches can talk to players – Public will be allowed to move around during a match (except at baselines) – No ranking points – Seven players according to the ranking (eighth guy plays thanks to “wild card”)
Chung’s [54] triumph was highly unexpected. The best of young players who could participate (Alexander Zverev) was already ranked highly enough to join the draw of the regular season-ending event in London, so he withdrew from Milan. It seemed that the champion could be Coric, Rublev or Shapovalov, the Korean was barely 6th best ranking-wise, but already in his two first matches he’d outplayed the favorites, and defeated Rublev [37] again in the final trailing *1:3 (15/30) in the 2nd set. “I’m just really, really happy, because, I don’t know, I really don’t know how I won here in Milan,” Chung said. “[It was a] really tough match tonight against Rublev. He was better than the last time [we played]. So I was just trying to play my best.” Chung confirmed that his success wasn’t accidental, advancing to the Australian Open semifinal two months later.
