   The Masters ’83 was held in January 1984… With this triumph, the 24-year-old McEnroe began the best year in his career, one of the most dominant ones in the Open Era. “To me this is the first event of 1984” explained McEnroe. “(But) I was worried over letting down because people regarded this for No. 1. It’s common knowledge that he goes down the line on his passing shots, so I wasn’t going to give him that shot. I dared him to go cross-court, but he wouldn’t do it.”

   S Mats Wilander 6-2, 6-4
   W Ivan Lendl 6-3, 6-4, 6-4

   # One year later McEnroe will win the event easily defeating Wilander & Lendl in the last two matches again
