Federer became the first man to win the Year End Championships six times (Ivan Lendl and Pete Sampras did it five times). The Swiss had plenty of opportunities to finish the final in straight sets: in the 2nd set he led 4:2* (40/30), 5:3, had a break point at 5-all, led 5:2* in the tie-break and finally Tsonga fought off a match point with a forehand winner. It was 11th match Federer won despite losing an MP-up set. I’ve included to the picture scorelines of all his main-level matches when he lost sets having match points (the statistic prepared after Toronto 2014).
Federer’s route to his 70th title:
rr Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-2, 2-6, 6-4
rr Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-0
rr Mardy Fish 6-1, 3-6, 6-3
S David Ferrer 7-5, 6-3
W Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3
