Points won directly behind the serve:
    35 % Ferrero – 30 of 85
    20 % Massu – 18 of 89

Rather an unexpected final under the roof of two baseliners; it occurred at the time when the serve-and-volley style was still alive. The final marked by [1] Ferrero’s unquestionable dominance from start to finish in the 2-hour 30-minute meeting of two 24-year-old players. “Being regarded as a clay-court specialist is not nice,” said Ferrero claiming his first indoor title. “I don’t like it because I think I got rid of it years ago.” The Spaniard played in Madrid ’03 his main-level tournament No. 100; he was the best player in the world & the sky was the limit. He got a chicken pox in March 2004 though, and never regained his status of the top competitor, waiting almost six years for another title! Massu [21] never played such an indoor final afterwards.

Ferrero’s route to his 11th title:
    2 Wayne Ferreira 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(4) – 2 m.p.
    3 Felix Mantilla 7-6(2), 7-6(0)
    Q Paradorn Srichaphan 6-4, 6-2
    S Roger Federer 6-4, 4-6, 6-4
    W Nicolas Massu 6-3, 6-4, 6-3

    # Ferrero trailed 2:5 & 3:5* (15/40) in the 3rd set vs Ferreira!

After the event Ferrero had a comfortable position to finish the year as the best player in the world, but the end of the season was disastrous for him – he finished it with six consecutive defeats (two in the Davis Cup final so no impact on the ATP ranking)
