Points won by each set: | 29-21, 38-26 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
28 % Lapentti – 14 of 50
18 % Hewitt – 12 of 64
A breakthrough season for them both even though five year difference separated them. Lapentti [14] had exceptionally difficult road to the final, winning all his matches from a set down being within points of losing those matches in the 2nd or 3rd sets. Tiredness could be expected from him, but he was fresh like a daisy and didn’t give the 18-year-old Hewitt [27] any chance. The Australian considerably helped playing very poorly at the net.
Lapentti’s route to his 3rd title:
2 Jan Siemerink 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) – 1 m.p.
3 Sebastien Grosjean 4-6, 6-4, 6-1
Q Gustavo Kuerten 5-7, 6-4, 7-5
S Magnus Gustafsson 6-7(5), 7-6(6), 6-2 – 1 m.p.
W Lleyton Hewitt 6-3, 6-2
