   11th July 1982, more than 17.000 spectators and the deciding 79-game rubber of the tie between USA & Sweden that lasted 6 hours and 22 minutes – the longest match in history for 22 years (until Santoro d. Clement, Roland Garros 2004) and the longest in the Davis Cup until 2015 (Leo Mayer d. Joao Souza)…
   McEnroe led 4:2* (40/30) in the 3rd set, wasted 8 mini-match points in total in four different games (the extreme set lasted two and a half hours!); at *7:8 (15/0) he won a 51-stroke rally with a smash! The 18-year-old Wilander missed just two serves between 8-all (deuce) and the end of the match! In the 1st set McEnroe trailed *1:4 and 4:5 (15/30), in the decider he was six points away from defeat serving at 5-all & 6-all.
   Two years later they meet in the Davis Cup final – a dead rubber – and the American wins 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 after 1:58 hrs wasting 3 match points in the 3rd set; shorter match than their amazing 3rd set in St. Louis which lasted 2 hours 39 minutes.
