32 % Bjorkman – 38 of 116
24 % Chang – 35 of 143
The opening rubber of the tie which was held in Göteborg (28-30 November).
Arguably the biggest singles win in Bjorkman’s career, accomplished after a 2-hour 55-minute duel. The Swede finished every set positively for himself with a streak of winning games (3, 5 & 4 respectively): he trailed *4:5 in the 1st set, *1:3 in the 3rd & *2:3 (30/40) in the 4th; there was an amazing 13-stroke rally as Chang had a game point to lead 4:2 in the 3rd set. About that point Bjorkman said: “That was a big turnaround. When I got the break back, I had to feel that I was in the match again… It’s incredible. It makes all the training worthwhile.”
Swedes clinched the victory on Saturday as Bjorkman & Nicklas Kulti defeated Jonathan Stark & Todd Martin in doubles. It was the second Swedish win over the United States in the Davis Cup finals, the previous one occurred 13 years before. Bjorkman vs Chang on YouTube
