Russia wins the Davis Cup trophy for the third time, but I can’t put the equal sign between 2021 and 2002, 2006. I don’t like the new format (second edition, the event skipped in 2020 due to pandemic) which is very similar to the ATP Cup which Russia won this year as well, so there’s no doubt that the Russian team was the strongest in 2021… Khachanov who has lost his singles position in the team, won the Olympic silver medal at the Olympics in Tokyo this year.
Croatia’s advancement to the final was very surprising. The 23-year-old Gojo [297] is a Challenger player, but he enjoyed a week of his life defeating Popyrin, Sonego & Lajovic. Against Rublev [5], the Croat delivered a good performance above his ranking, however, it could have been ‘6-4, 6-2 or 6-2, 6-4’ for the Russian who was far superior in the baseline rallies, had absolutely no problem to hold 11 times while it could have also been one set apiece because leading 5:4* in the tie-break, Gojo played a very good approach shot, yet Rublev responded with an excellent forehand passing-shot out of balance.
Final (Madrid): RUSSIA d. CROATIA 2-0
Andrey Rublev – Borna Gojo 6-4, 7-6(5)
Daniil Medvedev – Marin Cilic 7-6(7), 6-2
Andrey Rublev/Aslan Karatsev vs Mate Pavic/Nikola Mektic – not played
Russia’s route to the title:
round robin: Ecuador 3-0, Spain 2-1
Q: Sweden 2-0, S: Germany 2-1, W: Croatia 2-0
Singles: Rublev 4-1, Medvedev 5-0, doubles: Rublev/Karatsev 2-0 (Khachanov/Karatsev played a dead rubber vs Germany and lost it)
joining ATP & Davis Cups, Rublev lost only one match out of 9 this year, to the 40-year-old Lopez!
The event was played in three cities, mainly in Madrid, but also in Turin & Innsbruck. The following year Russians were unable to defend their title due to political reasons.
