Who knows, maybe the bizarre 3rd set was a critical moment in their head-to-head rivalry. When the match started, Becker [4] had just led 7-4 in their main-level confrontations with two consecutive loses (25-10 in the end), everything seemed to be wide open between these two young men… In the 3rd set Edberg broke in the 9th game, he began the following game with a volley winner, and the angry Becker threw his racket in such an unfortunate way that it landed in the stands almost hitting a spectator in the 5th row! Becker gave a flower to the woman he nearly hit, but received a point penalty – so 5:4 (30/0) for the fresh Edberg, Becker in a very bad mood probably feeling that the set has gone, and all of a sudden the Swede makes two simple volley errors, then commits two consecutive double faults!
Becker’s route to his 14th title:
Q Andres Gomez 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4
S Brad Gilbert 6-4, 6-2, 6-1
W Stefan Edberg 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, 6-2
