17 % Becker – 13 of 76

Eight days earlier in the Montreal semifinals, Edberg beat Becker 6-2, 6-4 snapping a 7-match losing streak to the West German. Certainly it helped the Swede to play another very good match, perhaps the best he’s ever experienced against Becker. After the final the happy Swede [3] said: “I couldn’t believe how well I played today.” Becker [4] confirmed: “He played out of his mind.” The West German had a break point at 1:0 in the opener, since then it was one way traffic – Edberg led *4:1 in 1st and 4:0* in 2nd set (!), completely neutralizing the opponent’s powerful serve. Becker committed 3 out of his 7 double faults in a game he won after all.

Edberg’s route to his 14th title:
1 Jimmy Arias 6-4, 6-4
2 Jakob Hlasek 7-6(1), 7-5
3 Tarik Benhabiles 6-3, 6-1
Q Brad Gilbert 6-1, 6-3
S Jimmy Connors 6-2, 6-3
W Boris Becker 6-4, 6-1
