  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 44-44, 27-33, 48-45, 30-20, 39-33 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
    33 % McEnroe – 61 of 180
    25 % Ivanisevic – 47 of 183

First meeting between two left-handed geniuses known for their temper tantrums: 31-year-old McEnroe [11] & twelve years younger Ivanisevic [10]. The Yugoslav led 5:2* (30-all) in the 3rd set, in the next game squandered a match point producing a forehand error and lost his first indoor final after 4 hours 30 minutes. I’m not sure whether it was Ivanisevic’s first MP-up loss. Judging by his scorelines it could hypothetically happen before in four matches: Fetterlein, Chesnokov, Srejber, Gustafsson. He won’t lose another MP-up match almost five years (Montreal ’95, Enqvist). McEnroe enjoyed his first MP-down victory in eight years! McEnroe’s next to last title… 7 of his 13 aces, he served in the decider.

McEnroe’s route to his 76th title:
    1 Milan Srejber 6-4, 6-3
    2 Nicklas Kulti 6-1, 6-2
    Q Andrei Cherkasov 6-3, 7-5
    S Scott Melville 6-2, 2-6, 6-3
    W Goran Ivanisevic 6-7(4), 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-3, 6-4 – 1 m.p.

    # Ivanisevic was coached at the time by Hungarian former-pro Balazs Taroczy (from September ’89 to February ’91)
