Arazi loved big venues & big occasions, so when he stepped into Rod Laver Arena (indoors) to face the best player in the world & defending champion, he was able to produce his best tennis, much beyond the level which his ranking would have indicated. In that highly entertaining encounter, Sampras hit 10 winners more (54-44… 49-42 in the picture) being on constant pressure from start to finish. Arazi had three break points already in the opening, longest 6-deuce game of the match, then held a set point (having saved four SPs) at 8:7* in the tie-break – Sampras fired an ace and won the breaker 11/9 with another ace. The American broke at 2-all in 2nd & 3-all in 3rd set to advance to the quarterfinals not dropping a set – in the last eight Karol Kucera stunned him in a 4-set meeting.
