Bizarre 2-hour 15-minute match… The 21-year-old Nalbandian as a Wimbledon ’02 runner-up, and a man who just ousted a round earlier Federer (the Swiss before his first major title, but already a Top 10 player), was a favourite against six years older German , for whom a major quarter-final seemed a lifetime success. Schuettler surprisingly led 6-3 4:2* (30/15) though. Nalbandian managed to win the set (Schuettler’s three double faults in the 12th game!) & it could (should) have been a shift of the momentum. However, the young Argentinian suffered a meltdown under the blazing Sun, and didn’t win a game from 1:2* in the 3rd set losing ten in a row!
