Points won directly behind the serve:
    33 % Courier – 32 of 96
    23 % Edberg – 25 of 105

Courier led *4:3 (30/0) in the 4th set, then held at ‘love’ trailing 4:5 to win the final three games. For the second time in the Open Era two consecutive finals in Melbourne were played between the same players (previously it occurred in years 1981-82 as Johan Kriek defeated twice Steve Denton):
    Aussie Open ’92: Courier d. Edberg 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2… 2 hrs 54 min | 38-48-47-39 min | Total points: 130-112 (242)
    Aussie Open ’93: Courier d. Edberg 6-2, 6-1, 2-6, 7-5… 2 hrs 30 min | 35-27-37-51 min | Total points: 115-86 (201)

Courier’s route to his 10th title:
    1 Lars Jonsson 7-5, 6-0, 6-3
    2 Robbie Weiss 6-2, 7-5, 6-4
    3 Guillaume Raoux 6-4, 6-3, 6-4
    4 Sergi Bruguera 6-1, 6-3, 7-6(5)
    Q Petr Korda 6-1, 6-0, 6-4
    S Michael Stich 7-6(4), 6-4, 6-2
    W Stefan Edberg 6-2, 6-1, 2-6, 7-5

Another interesting aspect of the 1993 final between Edberg and Courier was that it was played on an extremely hot day. I think it was around 45 degrees Celsius in the shade and about 65 degrees on court level! I believe for the first (and only!) time of his career Edberg played with a cap, at least at the early stages of the match. Today there is the “extreme heat policy” at the Australian Open and they would close the roof in those conditions. As far as I know the first time they did this was back in 1997 for the quarterfinal between the two Spaniards Carlos Moya and Felix Mantilla, because of immense heat.

Yes, and Mantilla complained afterwards. I enjoyed that match due to Moya’s offensive attitude. I had seen several matches of him in 1996 & his previous four during AO ’97, and didn’t notice serve-and-volley actions that he suddenly produced in his first major quarterfinal. It allowed me to believe he would beat Chang in the semis.
