   Indoor match… The German, who had been serving much harder in the opening two sets than in his previous matches, ran totally out of gas just after the 2nd set. Prior to that semifinal, he spent 6 hours (!) more on the courts than Federer. Kiefer’s shorts were completely wet… The German led 3:1 in their rivalry to finish at 3-12 having no chance in the last four meetings that followed Australia where it was third similar match within six months – “Kiefer wins a tight second set only to lose in four”. Here are scorelines of those matches:

   Wimbledon ’05 (3R): Federer d. Kiefer 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-1, 7-5… 2 hours 25 minutes… Total points: 125-98
   US Open ’05 (4R): Federer d. Kiefer 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-4… 3 hours… Total points: 139-125
   Aus Open ’06 (SF): Federer d. Kiefer 6-3, 5-7, 6-0, 6-2… 2 hours 25 minutes… Total points: 129-99

   Kiefer generally had an edge over Federer when the things got tighter because when he defeated the Swiss three straight times, he was always relatively close to lose those matches
