Points won by each set: [ 33-39, 47-42, 27-10, 35-25 ]
Points won directly on serve:
22 % Federer – 32 of 144
25 % Baghdatis – 29 of 114
Baghdatis [54] showed no hesitation in front of the best player in the world; he had built his confidence upon their first meeting at the US Open ’04 when Baghdatis was unknown, ranked 240th, playing his second main-level event, yet instead of a demolition job as majority of people expected, he played on equal terms for 1.5 hours before losing 8 of the last 10 games, and the night session match 2-6, 7-6, 3-6, 1-6.
1.5 years later in Melbourne, he was serving to stay in the opener and had two break points leading 2:0 in the very tight 2nd set. At 5-all the Cypriot led 30/0, also 40/0 in the following game, but dropped 4 & 5 points in succession – it made an impact on his demeanour in the 3rd set. Possibly he also paid the price for much more demanding route to the final. It lasted 2 hours 46 minutes, six minutes longer than Federer’s semifinal concluded with quite similar scoreline. [1] Federer was 7-0 in major finals at the time! He’ll lose his next Grand Slam final, a couple of months later in Paris to Rafael Nadal.
Federer’s route to his 35th title:
1 Denis Istomin 6-2, 6-3, 6-2
2 Florian Mayer 6-1, 6-4, 6-0
3 Max Mirnyi 6-3, 6-4, 6-3
4 Tommy Haas 6-4, 6-0, 3-6, 4-6, 6-2
Q Nikolay Davydenko 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(7), 7-6(5)
S Nicolas Kiefer 6-3, 5-7, 6-0, 6-2
W Marcos Baghdatis 5-7, 7-5, 6-0, 6-2
