The year 1984 belonged to McEnroe, but already at the end of 1983 he was almost unbeatable. He went to Australian Open following his Antwerp triumph, and Wilander snapped his 20-match winning streak in the semifinals. In my opinion it’s a pity that the European Community Championship titles aren’t officially recognized. In 1983 there took place the second edition of that lucrative event and the draw increased from 12 to 24 participants, so actually it looked like a regular Grand Prix tournament.

McEnroe’s route to his first Antwerp title:
2 Claudio Panatta 6-1, 6-1
Q Sandy Mayer 6-7(3), 7-6(3), 6-3
S Jose Higueras 6-1, 6-2
W Gene Mayer 6-4, 6-3, 6-4
