Points won by each set: | 34-28, 34-28, 39-32 |
Points won directly behind the serve:
26 % Rios – 25 of 96
33 % Siemerink – 33 of 99
By the end of the ’95 season the 20-year-old Rios had collected 3 titles. The second of them he obtained in quite peculiar circumstances. The day after losing the second round in Stuttgart, Rios missed his flight to Montreal, hence he stayed in Europe moving to Amsterdam. Despite his good ranking [57] for an ATP World Series event, he couldn’t enter the main draw because “wild cards” were already awarded, so he decided to play the qualifying matches – he won them easily against unanimous players, then another five matches and the tournament… he also triumphed in doubles (along with Sjeng Schalken) and it remains his lone title in doubles. The toughest set against Siemerink [51] was the last one, the Dutchman led 4:3* (30/0) and was quite close to create a triple mini-set point with a half-volley. He had three break point chances in that game anyway.
Rios’ route to his 2nd title: [ Belgraver 6-3, 6-1; Gollwitzer 6-3, 6-1 ]
1 Renzo Furlan 6-3, 7-6(2)
2 Alex Corretja 7-6(3), 6-4
Q Bernd Karbacher 4-6, 7-6(2), 7-5 – 1 m.p.
S Carlos Costa 7-6(1), 6-0
W Jan Siemerink 6-4, 7-5, 6-4
